Beginning and Intermediate Pottery; Instructor:

New students will develop skills to manipulate clay and discover the joys of
creating their first pots and sculptures. Pinch pots, coil, slab and the
potters wheel will be explored by all students. Many decorative techniques
are introduced and many glazes are on hand.
Includes 25# bag of clay, glazing and firing.
Beginning Monday September 22nd, 1-4pm or 6:30-9:30pm, 10 week session
Beginning and Intermediate Pastels; Instructor: Phil
Monteith PSA
This class is structured for the beginning student as well as for those who
have already worked with Pastels. Practice basic techniques for beginners
with suggestion for the more advanced student. Subjects to vary, including
still life, landscape, portrait and figure drawing with emphasis on accuracy
and the use of color. Students are encouraged to have as many pastel
materials as possible. A small modeling fee may be collected if a model is
brought in.
Beginning Tuesday Sept. 23rd 9-12 noon, 8 week session
Experience enjoyable exploration of tools and techniques to achieve a
variety of effects in watercolor. Shana teaches with an individualized
approach to help each student refine present skills and continue exploring
independently. Emphasis is on expression of feeling and ideas through use of
color, contrast and composition to create unique works of art.
Beginning Wednesday Sept. 24th 9-12, 8 week session
Fun with Watercolor Media; Instructor:
Julie Manfredi
This class is suitable for beginning,
intermediate, and advanced students. Let your creativity juices flow and
remain true to your own painting style. Students are encouraged to
experiment with a variety of materials, including pastels, colored pencils,
watercolor and acrylic paints. Painting on paper, canvas, masonite or gesso
surfaces. The student is encouraged to choose their own subject matter.

Beginning/Intermediate Oil Painting, Instructor:
Jan Gilbert
Beginners will learn the basics of traditional painting techniques, material
and tools to start them off on the right foot. A variety of subjects will be
explored including still life, landscape and portrait. The more advanced
students may work on their own projects. Individual attention will be
provided to each student. A beginning supply list will be provided for
reference.
Beginning Wednesday Sept. 24th, 6:30-9:30pm, 8 week session
This class is designed for the student who wants to work on their own but
still needs some instruction and encouragement or just prefers mornings.
Hand building and potters wheel. Beginners welcomed.
Beginning Thursday September 25th, 9am-12 noon, 8 week Session
Beginning Drawing, Instructor: Twana Johnson
Twana will bring to the class the latest techniques to make your drawing
experience easy to understand and exciting. This will be a comfortable
atmosphere. You won’t be afraid to pick-up a pencil or charcoal ever again
and draw, draw, draw. Supplies will be provided the first night and Twana
will have a material list available.
Beginning Thursday Sept. 25th, 6:30-9:30pm, 8 week session
Looking for something to do on a Friday evening??? Here's an opportunity to
explore your creative side and meet others of the same frame of mind. Hand
building and the potters wheel demo's each class. Pinch, coil, slab and
wheel thrown pottery will be introduced along with many decorative
techniques.
Take off your suits, put on your grubs and have some fun.
Beginning Friday Sept. 26th, 6:30-9:30pm, 8 week session
This is a great way to introduce children to the world of clay. 5 to 6
projects will be completed, including glazing.
Beginning Saturday Sept. 27th, 10-12noon for 8 weeks, Age group: 8-12 years

Children's and Family Mixed Media/Painting; Instructor:
Ben Murray-Oates
This exciting class makes painting fun and
educational. It is tailored to increase your child's/parent/grandparent
creative potential. With focus on color, painting styles, 3-D art and more.
Everyone will have a great time learning the tools needed to express their
creativity.
Beginning Saturday Sept. 27th 1-3pm, 8 week session age group: 6-12 years of
age (5year olds must be accompanied with an adult) cost reflects per person
rate.
Open Studio -NO INSTRUCTOR
Choose FREE or FEE open studio time. Free for
current adult students of any medium. Mix or match, try something new. FEE
for adult potters (not taking a class) is $75.00, which includes clay
firing, cone 6 glazing, use of extruder, slab roller and potters wheel. The
Open Studio has been established for students to work independently.
Beginning Sunday Sept. 28th, 1-5pm for 8 weeks

Digital cameras today are capable of amazing photography. Don Hershberger will
teach you how to get familiar with your camera and how it actually works,
and make suggestions on the various settings you can use for optimum
results. Four Tuesday evening sessions will feature:
1. A review of photography principles, how the cameras work, and getting
familiar with your camera and its capabilities.
2. Accessories, techniques and special capabilities.
3. Picture opportunities, composition suggestions, printing and archiving.
4. Image corrections and enhancements with Photoshop Elements or Microsoft
Windows Live Photo Gallery Plus software.
Four(4) Tuesday evenings starting Sept. 23, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $65
This is a great opportunity to be
introduced to the ancient art of Raku firing westernized. Brooks brings with
him some wonderful glazes, students need to bring bisque ware. Limitation:
Bring as many pieces that will fit onto a regular size piece of paper towel,
and no taller than 15”.
Come and spend a Saturday afternoon creating beautiful pottery and eating
pizza (will be provided). Bring a dish to pass.

Beginning
Monotypes, Collagraphic Monoprints, Embossing and Chine Colle’
Instructor: Ellen Ridenour
***Held at the Old Bag Factory in
Goshen 2nd floor turn left from elevator.*****
A monotype is a single print created by transferring to paper, an image that
has been painted on another surface. You will be shown the two basic methods
of working on a plate (additive and subtractive). You will also learn how to
create Collagraphic Monoprints along with using Chine Colle’. For your Chine
Colle’ project we will decorate your own paper with wooden textile stamps.
Proper use of the etching press demo. The studio is filled with created
objects and mixed media fun stuff to add additional embellishments to any of
your prints. This class will open up a whole new world for artist.
Saturday October 25th, 10am-5pm, Cost $75.00 includes all materials and use
of Conrad etching printing press.
Beginning Stone
Sculpture, Instructor: Wayne Harshberger
This will be a great introduction
to the world of Stone Carving from an award winning stone sculptor. Create
mini-sculpture from Alabaster. These will make a great Christmas Gift or
just for yourself. All materials and tools provided. Be Michelangelo for a
day. Bring your own lunch. Snacks by EAL volunteers.

Instructor Biographies
Brooks Bouwkamp:
Ceramics/Sculpture
Bouwkamp holds a BFA in Ceramics from Andrews University. He is the Kiln
Technician for the South Bend Regional Museum of Art. His work can be found
in galleries and private collections throughout the United States. Most
recently, his work was added to the ceramic collection of the Bermuda
National Gallery.
Shana
Dines: Shana has taught at EAL for over 6 years. She was an active EAL
Board member for several years. She has exhibited in the Main Street Showcase
of Art. Her list of accomplishments includes Midwest Regional Museum of
American Art Award winner, and recently being published as an Illustrator
for a children’s book.
Janet Gilbert: Jan graduated with her BFA
in painting and drawing from IUSB. She works in oil, acrylic, pastel and
watercolor. She is a member of EAL, Northern Indiana Artists,
Northern Indiana Pastel Society, St. Joseph Watercolor Society and Studio
Arts. She has exhibited in solo shows as well as EAL, Heartland Artists,
NIA, Watercolor Society, Pastel Society, Studio Arts and the Midwest Museum
of Art regional shows. Her work is represented by Sycamore Fine Arts in
Goshen and Frame of Mind Gallery in Niles.

Don
Hershberger: A former and now again President of EAL and Website
Master, member and Membership Chair for the Photographers Guild, Goshen. He
has exhibited and won awards at Main Street Showcase of Art and The Midwest
Museum of American Art Regional competitions. His most recent accomplishment
is receiving Best of Show at our juried Spring Show, 2005

Laura
Miller: Laura has worked in clay for over 20 years. She started as a
student at Indiana University and has also apprenticed at the South Bend
Regional Museum of Art in kiln operations and studio management. Training
was done under Juliana Bergsma. She attended Workshops with Tom Coleman and
Patrick Horsley for ceramics at Sierra Nevada College, and is a current
NCECA (National Conference for Education of Ceramic Arts) member. At the Art
department in IU South Bend, she received instruction from Harold Zisla for
Design and Tuck Langland for sculpture.

Julie
Manfredi: Julie is a former President of the EAL and is a current
member of the South Bend Art Center and the St. Joe Valley Watercolor Society.
She has exhibited in the EAL shows, the Midwest Museum of Art’s regional show,
the Main Street Showcase of Art, the Heartland Artists in Winona Lake, and at
Oakwood. Exhibitions also include Nappanee Library, One of a Kind in Chicago,
Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Michigan City, Columbia City and Round the Fountain
in Lafayette. She also teaches at St. Mary’s convent and her work is currently
on display at Art Matters, Goshen and D'Vine Gallery, Shipshewana.
Phil
Monteith: As well as doing pastels, he is a self taught woodcut (block
print) printmaker. He studied pastels with Daniel E. Greene, master pastellist;
Larry Blovits, master pastellist; and Ben Konis. He is a juried member of the
Society of American
Graphic Artists in New York, NY, a juried signature member of the Chicago
Pastel Painters, Chicago, IL, and a juried signature member of the Pastel Society
of America, NY, NY. He is a member of the new Northern Indiana Pastel Society,
in South Bend, the Mid-America
Print Council, a Life member of Northern Indiana Artists, South Bend, IN, the
Hoosier Salon, and a past president of the Elkhart Art League. Phil has won numerous awards in printmaking and pastels
and his work is in collections in nine other States, as well as the
corporate collection of the Bayer Corp.

Benjamin Alexander Murray-Oates:
As a native South Australian, Ben came to the United States in 1996 to study
art. He first acquired a degree in graphic design from Ivy Tech in South
Bend and has currently obtained a B.F.A. degree in graphic design and
painting/drawing from IUSB. He has presented and sold work at the Heartland
Artists Annual Juried Competition and is interested in a variety of art;
painting, drawing, watercolor, mixed media, calligraphy and computer art
design.
