MISSION & VISION

It is the purpose of the Elkhart Art League to elevate the art standards of the Elkhart community and foster a deeper appreciation of art for all. Those interested in making art are encouraged to develop their artistic abilities to the fullest extent.

Classes and workshops in a variety of media are offered to people of all ages. Education and enjoyment of the creative process in a relaxed friendly setting is one of our main objectives. Two major exhibits are held each year. We invite members of the Elkhart Art League as well as non-members in the community to submit artwork for consideration.

History of the Elkhart Art League

In 1925, the Artists’ Traveling Association was formed to facilitate the travel of artists on painting tours, to art shows, and to lectures. In 1929, a constitution was written, a more formal organization set up, and the name was changed to Elkhart Art League. The contingencies of war-time affected participation in the League during World War II and later.

In 1951, a civic-minded group of artists reactivated and reorganized the League. Steady growth of interest and in programing has marked the years since. In 1962, the League was incorporated as a non-profit organization. The Internal Revenue Service classified the Elkhart Art League as 501(c)(3) which qualifies donations to the Elkhart Art League as tax deductible.

In 1966, the Elkhart Art League raised funds to remodel a building in  High Dive Park. The building was leased through the Elkhart Parks and Recreation Department for use as a headquarters and classrooms through 2014.

In 2015, the Elkhart Art League moved to its current (2026) location in the Elkhart Train Depot just south of the Elkhart Post Office. Our address is 131 Tyler Street, B1, Elkhart, Indiana, 46516, located at the west end of the building. We share the building with the Council on Aging, Amtrak station, and the Elkhart City Technology department.

In 2025, we celebrated our milestone centennial anniversary with a big event sometime in October! A fun event was held, including a member show, artists’ sale, food vendors, and live music.

We hope you will join us in 2026 to celebrate our wonderful local art scene and support our non-profit organization. Join us as we continue to spread our love of art among our local community. You can join as a member, take classes, and enjoy our events. We look forward to celebrating another century of local art in Elkhart and our surrounding communities.
