SPRING "Try It" Wheel Thrown Pottery Workshop with Lauren Morales

Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 11:00 pm – 12:30 pm

One Time session on pottery wheel, 1-1/2 hours per session. Age 10 years and up. Exceptions may be made if parents are with children. Limit of 7-10 students per session. This will be a group workshop.

Fee is $50 for Members and $60 for Non-Members which includes clay, tools, glaze, firing, aprons, and instruction.

Location: Elkhart Art League Studio, 132 Tyler Street, B-1, Elkhart IN 46516

in the west end of the Depot Building south of the Elkhart Post Office

Cost: Members $50; Non-members $60 for the 1-1/2 hour workshop

Have you always wanted to try wheel thrown pottery? Try out our intro to wheel throwing class aimed for students to have fun and get messy! No expectations, facilitated by an instructor to help guide you in the process of throwing.

Schedule: 10 minutes demonstration time, 1 hour 10 minutes wheel time, 10 minutes to choose glazes, label pieces, and clean up.

Disclaimer: Workshops are messy, wear appropriate clothing, aprons will be provided. If it is your first time on the wheel, you may not end up with a finished piece. Clay designs will not be complete day of the workshop. Drying, firing, and glazing takes up to 3 weeks. EAL staff will glaze and trim finished pieces for you with your preferred color. Workshops are non-refundable. Students are paying for the experience to use the pottery wheel and not the finished product.

In this class, you will learn the basic techniques of throwing clay on the potters’ wheel.  You will go through all the steps of creating clay forms from the initial step of centering the clay to making forms such as cylinders, bowls, plates, mugs, and pitchers. You will learn how to use the various tools involved in the throwing process, as well as how to trim, glaze, and fire your creations.  Whether you are a beginner or if you have some advanced experience with working on the pottery wheel, you’ll be sure to enjoy learning and being creative with this exciting medium! You will also learn new glazing techniques and finish several projects.

About Lauren Morales

Lauren Morales is our new Wheel Thrown Pottery teacher. She has a Bachelor of FIne Art in Ceramics from Goshen College and taught in the Goshen Community Schools and at the Boys&Girls Clubs. She is a certified teacher and visual arts artist, her specialty being acrylic custom jewelry which she sells at local shows and her Etsy and FaceBook sites under the business Moon+Flower Studio.
